Design & UX Lesson 3 of 5

Wireframing the Smallest Useful MVP

21:10 Designing Your First Digital Product

Learn low-fidelity wireframing techniques to layout your screens, clarify information hierarchy, and eliminate unnecessary visual noise.

Lesson notes

Wireframes are the skeletal framework of your product. By deliberately restricting yourself to black, white, and shades of gray, you force yourself and your team to evaluate layout, navigation, and content hierarchy instead of colors and fonts.

What you'll learn

  • Sketch 8 ideas in 8 minutes (Crazy Eights method)
  • Establish visual hierarchy with grayscale layouts
  • Organize layout grids: 8pt grid system & responsive containers

1. The 8-Point Grid System

Professional digital products base all dimensions, margins, and paddings on multiples of 8 (8px, 16px, 24px, 32px, 48px, 64px). This creates visual rhythm, speeds up developer handoff, and prevents chaotic alignment issues.

2. Information Architecture (IA)

Every screen should have one primary action (Hero action), secondary supportive links, and clear navigation paths. If a screen has three buttons competing for equal visual weight, the user will experience decision paralysis.

Practice exercise

Crazy Eights Sketching

Fold a sheet of paper into 8 rectangles. Set a timer for 8 minutes and draw 8 completely different UI layout ideas for your app's home dashboard.

Hint: Do not judge early ideas. Let the first three be conventional, and push yourself to experiment with unconventional layouts on frames 6 through 8.
